IC&I Waste Management Survey

About Us

The Office of the Auditor General of Ontario (OAGO) is an independent office that conducts value-for-money audits of provincial government programs. You can read more about our office at www.auditor.on.ca. To ensure we obtain a full understanding of the programs and entities we audit, we consult with stakeholders involved in or familiar with these programs.

About this Survey

We are currently conducting a value-for-money audit of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Park’s programs relating to the reduction and diversion of non-residential, non-hazardous waste and would appreciate your feedback regarding some aspects of your waste management operations. Your responses will help us gain a better understanding of how waste is managed in Ontario and key barriers to diversion for the waste management industry. A summary of the aggregated results may be included as part of our office's Annual Report to be released in late 2020. We are not requesting any identifying information of your organzation in the survey.

Who is this survey for?
This survey is for waste collectors, transfer stations, material recovery (sorting) facilities, processing facilities, compost or anaerobic digestion facilities in Ontario that handle any amount of non-residential, non-hazardous solid waste.

Who in your organization should complete this survey?
The respondent should be in a position to answer general questions (in consultation with other staff as needed) about:

  • your waste management operations
  • the movement of waste (sources and destinations)
  • breakdown of waste stream, and
  • challenges to diversion for your waste facility or service (such as costs, contamination issues, etc.)

One respondent may answer for multiple facilities operated by your organization, or you may have separate respondents for different divisions or facilities. However, we ask for only one respondent to answer questions about any specific waste facility or collection service.

Completing this Survey:
Respondents will be asked to complete a maximum of 5 sections, depending on the number of waste services you operate. Each section will take about 5 to 7 minutes to complete. Depending on how many services you operate, the total survey will take approximately 10 to 35 minutes of your time.

You can go back to a previous question at any time by clicking on the "Previous" button on the bottom left side, or the "Question index" in the top right corner. Do NOT press the back arrow in your browser.

You have the option of saving your unfinished survey and returning to it later --> to do this you must click "resume later" in top right corner of the survey. You will be prompted to create a username and password. To return to the survey, click the survey link again and click "load unfinished survey" in the top right corner.

Please note that, for the purposes of this survey, “Industrial, commercial and institutional (IC&I)” waste means waste from industry (e.g., manufacturers), businesses (e.g., retail stores, malls, restaurants, office buildings) and institutions (e.g., universities, schools, hospitals), but does not include construction and demolition (C&D) waste or waste from multi-residential buildings (i.e., apartments and condos).

We would greatly appreciate if you could complete the survey by Friday May 29, 2020.
